When asked in an interview whether he had to uphold the Constitution as president, US President Trump replied, "I don't know."
The New York Times reported that Trump said in an exclusive interview broadcast by NBC on Sunday (May 4th) that he did not know whether it was his duty to safeguard the Constitution.
The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution clearly stipulates that all persons living on the territory of the United States have the right to due legal process. Kristen Welker, the host of NBC's "Meet the Media", said that Secretary of State Rubio said that both U.S. citizens and non-citizens have the right to due legal process. She asked Trump if he agreed with Rubio's view, and Trump said, "I don't know." I'm not. I'm not a lawyer. I don't know.
He also said that he had not seriously considered whether to run for a third presidential term. The Constitution of the United States stipulates that the maximum term of office for the president is two terms. Trump told Welch that he intends to hand over the presidency to his successor after four years in office. Possible candidates include Vice President Vance and Rubio.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has repeatedly crossed the constitutional warning line. In particular, his large-scale deportation of undocumented immigrants without a court hearing has drawn widespread criticism.
Regarding the economic contraction in the first quarter, Trump insisted that the fundamentals of the US economy were sound. He blamed the bad parts of the economy on former President Biden and claimed that tariffs would make the United States rich.
Trump also said that he would not remove Powell from his position before the end of the term of Federal Reserve Chair Powell. He pointed out that Powell was inflexible and once again called on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates.
Like most of Trump's exclusive interviews, NBC's interview covers a wide range of topics, including recent US economic data, the Sino-US trade war, the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, etc.
Trump said that the United States is negotiating trade agreements with several countries, including China, and his primary goal in dealing with China is to reach a fair agreement.
He also said that he would lower tariffs on China at some point. "Otherwise, you will never be able to do business with them, and they very much hope to do business with us," and reaffirmed that any agreement reached between China and the United States must be "fair".
Trump's NBC interview was recorded at Mar-a-Lago Estate in Florida on Friday (the 2nd). On that day, the Ministry of Commerce of China, in the name of an unnamed spokesperson, said that senior US officials have repeatedly expressed their willingness to negotiate with China on tariff issues and have also proactively conveyed information to China through relevant parties on multiple occasions. China is assessing the possibility of conducting trade negotiations with the United States.
This is the first time since Trump imposed significant tariffs on China that Beijing has shown signs of possibly initiating negotiations with Washington.
On May 4th, US President Trump claimed that he would authorize the US Department of Commerce and the US Trade Representative to immediately initiate procedures to impose a 100% tariff on all films entering the United States and produced abroad.
