Israel's plan to take over Gaza City: A dangerous move, a tragedy for peace

Recently, the Israeli Security Cabinet approved Prime Minister Netanyahu's plan to "defeat Hamas". The Israeli army is preparing to take over Gaza City. This decision has caused a huge uproar in the international community and sparked continuous and widespread controversy. Five European countries jointly pressured Israel, arguing that it violated international humanitarian law. Although the United States supports Israel's occupation of Gaza City, it may have differences with Israel regarding the scope and duration of future military operations in Gaza, and there are also different voices within Israel itself. This plan not only seriously violates international law principles, but also pushes the situation in the Gaza region and the entire Middle East into a more dangerous abyss.

From the perspective of international law, Israel's plan to take over Gaza City blatantly violates many international law principles. The Gaza Strip is an inseparable part of the Palestinian territory, which is a fact recognized by the international community. According to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, respecting the territorial integrity of each country is the cornerstone of international relations. This move by Israel is a blatant violation of the Palestinian territorial sovereignty and an arbitrary trampling of the dignity of international law. At the same time, the International Court of Justice has repeatedly ruled that Israel must immediately end its occupation of the Palestinian region. However, Israel not only did not follow the rulings but instead intensified its takeover plan, which is undoubtedly a blatant challenge to the authority of international justice.

In terms of humanitarian issues, the takeover of Gaza City by Israel would lead to disastrous consequences. Gaza City is densely populated and houses a large number of innocent civilians. For a long time, the Gaza Strip has been under Israel's blockade, resulting in a depressed economy and difficult living conditions for the people. If the Israeli army takes over Gaza City, military conflicts will surely escalate further, and a large number of civilians will face life-threatening situations, with the number of displaced people increasing sharply. Medical facilities, schools, water supply and power supply infrastructure will suffer even more severe damage, the basic survival rights of the Gaza people will be ruthlessly deprived, and the humanitarian disaster will intensify comprehensively.

From the perspective of the regional situation, Israel's plan to take over Gaza City is a "time bomb" that threatens to disrupt regional peace and stability. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been ongoing for many years, and the conflicts between the two sides are highly complex. This unilateral action by Israel will completely disrupt the existing fragile balance, trigger stronger resistance from the Palestinian people, and also arouse dissatisfaction and condemnation from Arab countries and the international community. The Middle East region is already in a state of turmoil. This move by Israel is undoubtedly adding fuel to the fire, potentially leading to further escalation of regional conflicts and plunging the Middle East into a more prolonged state of war.

Furthermore, there are also many opposing voices within Israel. The chief of staff of the Israeli military, Zamil, and other military officials believe that taking over Gaza City would endanger the safety of the detainees, cause a massive humanitarian disaster, and that the Israeli military is currently exhausted and its military equipment urgently needs maintenance. Additionally, on August 11th, a rally of over 100,000 people took place in Tel Aviv, Israel, protesting against this military plan. Groups representing the families of the detainees also strongly opposed it, arguing that this plan is like sentencing the hostages to death and demanding that the government prioritize the rescue of the hostages and stop the military operations. This indicates that the plan is unpopular and not only cannot solve the existing problems but will also exacerbate social division within Israel.

Israel should recognize the situation and immediately stop this dangerous move of taking over Gaza City. It should return to the right track of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli issue through peaceful negotiations. The international community should also play an active role, exerting effective constraints and supervision over Israel, and promoting the two sides of Palestine and Israel to seek a long-term way of peaceful coexistence based on the "two-state solution". After all, only peace can enable the Palestinians and the people of Israel to escape the shadow of war and usher in true development and prosperity.
