The US court urgently halted the government's "ban on international students" against Harvard University, but US President Trump defended this policy.
AFP reported that Trump posted on Social media Truth Social on Sunday (May 25th), saying: "Why doesn't Harvard University recognize that nearly 31% of its students are from abroad?" Some of these countries are not friendly to the United States, but they do not pay for students' education expenses, and they have never intended to pay either.
He also said, "We want to know who these foreign students are. This is a reasonable request because we gave Harvard University billions of dollars, but Harvard University has been reluctant to disclose it for a long time."
The US Department of Homeland Security issued a statement on Thursday (the 22nd), announcing the revocation of Harvard University's "Student and Exchange Visitor Information System" (SEVIS) certification and the ban on accepting international students.
Homeland Security Secretary Noam said, "Admitting international students is a privilege, not an inherent right," and this move is a warning to all universities and academic institutions across the United States. She accused Harvard University of inciting violence and anti-Semitism and cooperating with the Communist Party of China.
She threatened last month that international students would be prevented from entering Harvard University unless the university handed over records of "illegal and violent activities" of visa holders.
Harvard University filed a lawsuit in the federal court of Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, accusing the government of violating the constitution and having a "direct and devastating impact" on Harvard and its international students and scholars.
A federal court in Massachusetts, the United States, issued a restraining order, ordering the Trump administration to temporarily refrain from implementing the policy that prohibits Harvard University from admitting international students and to maintain the status quo at least until the court holds a hearing next Thursday (the 29th).
Harvard currently has approximately 6,800 international students
The White House is cracking down on American universities in many aspects on the grounds that the government believes this is a response to runaway anti-Semitism and that diversity programs aimed at addressing the historical oppression of minorities need to be reversed.
Harvard currently has approximately 6,800 international students, accounting for 27% of the total student population. The majority of them are pursuing graduate programs.
The cancellation of the qualification to recruit international students is the latest move by the Trump administration to suppress Harvard University. Harvard's refusal to allow the government to supervise its enrollment and recruitment procedures as well as political leanings has enraged Trump.
Trump had previously announced the freezing of a multi-year grant of 2.2 billion US dollars to Harvard. Trump also threatened to deprive Harvard of its tax-exempt status. Harvard filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on April 21, accusing the government of attempting to manipulate Harvard's academic decisions by freezing federal funds.
