Syrian security personnel captured a terrorist gang that attacked a church the previous day in the suburbs of the capital Damascus on Monday (June 23). Six people were arrested and two were killed in the operation.
Xinhua News Agency reported that the Syrian interior department issued a statement saying that after a suicide attack at a church in Damascus on the 22nd, security personnel, in collaboration with the intelligence department, launched an operation and captured a terrorist gang associated with the extremist group "Islamic State".
The statement said that security personnel arrested the leader of the gang and five members during the operation. Among the two killed, one was a key person who assisted the suicide attacker in entering the attacked church, and the other was preparing to carry out new terrorist activities in Damascus. Bomb vests and a large amount of weapons and ammunition were seized on the spot.
On June 22nd, a suicide attack occurred at an Orthodox church in eastern Damascus. The Syrian state news agency reported on the 23rd, citing health department sources, that the attack has caused 25 deaths and 63 injuries. This is one of the most serious terrorist attacks that have occurred in Syria since the political upheaval in December last year.
