After two members of the US National Guard were seriously shot by an Afghan citizen, US President Trump ordered a comprehensive review of the asylum applications approved by former President Biden during his administration and the green cards issued to citizens of 19 countries.

According to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg, officials from the US Department of Homeland Security said on Thursday (November 27) that Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan immigrant suspected of shooting two members of the National Guard in Washington, D.C. Entered the United States through the "Operation Allies Welcome" program in 2021.

Hours after the shooting, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it would indefinitely suspend all immigration applications related to Afghan nationals as of that day.

USCIS Director Edlow said that at Trump's request, he also ordered "a comprehensive and strict re-examination of the green cards of every foreigner from all countries of concern."

He did not specify which countries the United States has listed as countries of concern. When asked, USCIS mentioned the travel ban imposed by Trump on citizens of 19 countries in June, including Afghanistan, Burundi, Laos, Togo, Venezuela, Sierra Leone and Turkmenistan.

Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) searched multiple properties in Washington State and San Diego. Investigators seized a large number of electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops and ipads, from the home of the shooting suspect, Lakanwalle. His relatives were also questioned.

In a recorded video released at the White House on Wednesday (26th), Trump said, "We must now re-examine every foreigner who entered the United States from Afghanistan during the Biden administration, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure that any foreigner who does not belong here or is not beneficial to our country is deported."

The Biden administration completely withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in 2021, and the Taliban took full control of the country. The "Welcome Allies" program, launched by Biden, aims to accommodate Afghans who helped the United States during the war in Afghanistan and are worried about retaliation from the Taliban after the withdrawal of US troops. More than 70,000 Afghans have settled in the United States through this program.

FBI Director Patel, CIA Director Ratcliffe and Secretary of War Hegses confirmed that Rakanwaller had cooperated with the US troops stationed in Afghanistan.
