The US Supreme Court has once again given the green light to President Trump's tough immigration policy, allowing law enforcement to continue conducting raids in Southern California on people who may face deportation due to race or language. A liberal Supreme Court justice said the ruling meant Latinos could be arrested at any time, while California Governor Newsom predicted a "racial terror march" in Los Angeles.
Reuters reported that the US Supreme Court on Monday (September 8) approved the Justice Department's request to suspend an order by a judge in Los Angeles. This order prohibits law enforcement officers from intercepting or detaining citizens based solely on factors such as race, ethnicity, or English pronunciation with a Spanish or other language accent, in the absence of evidence of "reasonable doubt".
The Supreme Court issued only a brief ruling, dismissing the challenge launched by a group of Latino people against Trump's immigration raid. The award was not signed and no explanations were attached.
Newsom, a Democrat, strongly condemned the Supreme Court's ruling. In a statement, he said, "The majority of the Supreme Court chosen by Trump himself has just become the commander-in-chief of the racial terror march in Los Angeles."
The current nine justices of the United States Supreme Court consist of six conservative justices and three liberal justices, among whom three conservative justices were nominated by Trump during his first presidential term.
On July 11th, Federal District Judge Maame Frimpong of Los Angeles, California, ruled that the Trump administration's raid on illegal immigrants might have violated the provisions of the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution that prohibit unreasonable searches and seizures.
Judge Fleming's order applies to most areas of Southern California.
