The National Institute of Health Crisis Management of Japan released new data stating that from June 9th to 15th, a total of 2,970 cases of pertussis were reported in Japan. Since the beginning of this year, the cumulative number of reported cases has exceeded 30,000, which is nearly eight times the total number of cases last year.
Xinhua News Agency reported that according to the preliminary statistics of the weekly report on the occurrence trend of infectious diseases in the 24th week of this year released by the agency, Japan reported 2,970 cases of pertussis this week, a decrease from 3,044 cases in the previous week, but still at a high level of prevalence. The cumulative number of reported cases this year has reached 31,966, which is nearly eight times the total of 4,054 cases for the whole of last year.
Pertussis is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by Bordetella pertussis infection. It is mainly transmitted through droplets and contact, and the incubation period is generally seven to ten days. The patient initially presents with cold symptoms, and then a characteristic spasmodic cough will occur. If young children fall ill, they are prone to develop severe conditions and may also develop pneumonia or brain diseases, leading to death.
At present, the main preventive measure against pertussis is vaccination, and basic immunization is usually completed during infancy. However, the efficacy of the vaccine will gradually weaken several years after vaccination. This is also one of the main reasons for the prevalence of pertussis in Japan this year.
Experts say that if there are family members with weak resistance such as young children, the elderly or pregnant women, it is recommended to get vaccinated every ten years. In daily life, one should wash hands frequently. When having a cold, one should pay attention to cough etiquette, wear a mask, have a good rest when feeling unwell, and seek medical attention as soon as possible if there are symptoms of coughing.
