Lee Jae, the former leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was elected as the party's candidate for the 21st presidential election next Sunday (April 27th).

The Yonhap News Agency reported that the Democratic Party announced the primary results of its presidential candidate at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province on Sunday. The results showed that Lee Jae-myung ultimately ranked first with 89.77% of the votes and was elected as the party's presidential candidate.

This vote share is the highest record for the presidential candidate election of the Democratic Party since South Korea achieved democratization in 1987.

In addition, the voting rates of the other two candidates, Kim Dong-yeon and Kim Kyung-soo, were 6.87% and 3.36% respectively.

On April 4, the Constitutional Court of South Korea unanimously approved the impeachment case of President Yoon Suk Yeol, stating that Yoon Suk Yeol's announcement of emergency martial law late at night on December 3 last year lacked due process and legal basis, constituting a serious constitutional violation and illegal act, and immediately terminated Yoon Suk Yeol's position as president.

The new presidential election of South Korea will be held on June 3rd.
