Russia launched about 120 missiles and 90 drones Sunday in a massive, coordinated air campaign against Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
Reuters and Agence France-Presse reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a statement on social media after the attack, saying: "The enemy is targeting the energy infrastructure of the entire territory of Ukraine." Unfortunately, attacks and falling rocks have caused damage to infrastructure."
Ukraine's Foreign Minister says Russia has launched its "biggest ever" air strikes in the country. "Russia has launched one of its largest airstrikes: drones and missiles targeting peaceful cities, sleeping civilians and critical infrastructure."
Ukrainian energy operator DTEK announced emergency power cuts in Kiev and two eastern regions. "Emergency power cuts are in effect in Kiev, Kyiv Oblast, Donetsk oblast and Dnepropetrovsk Oblast," it said on Telegram.
Earlier, Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuri Galushchenko said on Telegram: "Our energy system is under massive attack, the Russian military is attacking power generation and transmission facilities all over Ukraine."
AFP reporters heard explosions in the early morning near Kiev and Slovyansk in Donetsk region.
Zelensky said Russian air strikes had destroyed half of Ukraine's energy production capacity.
Ukraine's harsh winter is approaching and the country is already suffering from severe energy shortages. Kiev has pleaded with Western Allies to help rebuild the power grid and provide its military with more anti-aircraft weapons.
