A bus has plunged into a ravine near the Himalayas in India, killing at least 36 passengers.
The accident happened at 8.30am local time on Monday (November 4) in the Malchula district of the northern state of Uttarakhand, part of the Himalayan region, Agence France-Presse reported.
Senior official Rawat said 36 people have been confirmed dead so far. "Three seriously injured people were taken to hospital by helicopter."
A local police official told Reuters that the bus, which came from Gaval in the north and was heading to Ramnagar district, had at least 42 passengers on board.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his "deepest condolences" to the families of the victims.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ali Darmi said he had ordered an investigation into the accident.
Marchula is one of the tourist destinations in the hills of Uttarakhand. Many mountain roads in the Himalayas are the subject of frequent road accidents, mainly due to poorly maintained roads and reckless driving on tortuous terrain.
