A total of 47 people, including five locals and 42 foreigners, were arrested during the operation last Saturday (15 February).

Electronic waste has become the fastest growing waste problem in the world, and if not handled properly, it will cause serious harm to human health and the environment, Guangming Daily quoted Haq Mafa, brigade commander of the General Operations Force, as saying in a statement.

He said that in view of this, the Ordinary Operations Force, the China Brigade Joint Environment Bureau, launched 12 simultaneous clampdown operations in four states - Selangor (seven), Sembilan and Johor (two each) and Malacca (one) - at 2pm last Saturday.

"The five local suspects arrested are four men and one woman, of Malay and Chinese descent, while the 42 foreign suspects, including 40 men and two women, come from various countries including Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China and Singapore."

Currently, all cases will be investigated under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, the Arms Act 1960 and the Immigration Act 1963.

Hakema stressed that the OPS Forces will continue to shoulder the heavy responsibility of maintaining national security and public order, with a high sense of responsibility and professionalism, and spare no effort to safeguard the well-being of the people and the prosperity of the country.
