South Korea's biggest opposition party, the Minjoo Party, will relaunch an impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yuol, which will be voted on Saturday.
Yonhap News Agency reported that Kang Yu-jeong, a spokesman for the National Assembly of the Minjoo Party, said Sunday (8) that the Democratic Party will continue to press ahead with the impeachment of Yun Seok-hyol as it was submitted to the National Assembly last Thursday (5) and voted on Saturday (7). The new impeachment bill will be submitted to the plenary session of the National Assembly on Thursday (12) and voted on Saturday.
Yoon's sudden declaration of martial law last Tuesday, which was overturned hours later by the National Assembly, triggered a political shock. Opposition parties banded together to file an impeachment motion against Yoon in the National Assembly, but the motion was dropped last Saturday after a quorum was not reached in the plenary session.
After the defeat of the impeachment motion, Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung announced that he would reintroduce the impeachment motion on a weekly basis until the final goal is achieved. He stressed that the ruling People's Power Party is a "party of internal strife," and Yoon is the biggest risk to South Korea. We will fight to the end to put an end to civil strife and restore constitutional order and democracy.
