South Korean budget carrier Busan Air said it would ban passengers from putting their luggage with power banks in the overhead compartment after a fire on one of its planes last week to prevent a repeat of the incident.
An Air Busan flight bound for Hong Kong caught fire before take-off on Tuesday, burning almost all the top of the cabin, but all 176 passengers and crew were evacuated in time, with no casualties.
Preliminary speculation is that the fire source of the passenger plane may be a charging bank or other electronic supplies.
Air Busan announced on Tuesday that passengers' bags will be checked at the boarding gate, and those without power banks will be tagged and allowed to be placed in the baggage compartment above their seats. The measure will be piloted from Friday (7th) before being extended to all flights.
Air Busan stipulates that any charging bank should be carried with you in order to detect and deal with overheating, smoke, fire and other problems in a timely manner.
