A public opinion poll shows that the approval rating of the conservative government led by Prime Minister Koizumi Masahiko has dropped below 50% for the first time since it came to power last October.
The results of a survey released by the Current Affairs News Agency on Thursday (July 16) show that the approval rating of the Gao City Cabinet is 49%. Among them, the approval rate among voters aged 60 and above has decreased the most, dropping from 63.7% last month to 39.9%.
AFP reported that although supporters still praise the leadership and integrity of Japan's first female prime minister, the main reasons for opposition include "having little hope" and "poor policies".
In February this year, Koishi won the early election for the House of Representatives with an overwhelming majority, strengthening her power base. This was partly due to her high popularity among young voters, who were attracted by her diplomatic skills, charisma, and the changes she symbolized.
