More than 100 vehicles have crashed on South Korea's motorways because of icy roads

More than 100 vehicles have been involved in a pile-up on a highway in South Korea's capital region, causing injuries and road congestion. South Korean police said the cause of the accident was icy roads.

Xinhua quoted South Korea's Yonhap news agency as saying multiple vehicles, including trucks, buses and cars, crashed on a road in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, around 5:15 local time (4:15 Singapore time) on Tuesday. The fire department said the incident involved four six-car rear-ends, one three-car rear-ends, six two-car rear-ends and five separate accidents. One driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police and fire departments are dealing with the incident and carrying out road clearance work, spraying the snow melting agent calcium chloride on the icy section of the road.

A 43-car collision occurred on the Munsan Expressway in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province at 5:50 p.m. Nine drivers were injured and taken to hospital. Police and fire departments have cordoned off the road and are carrying out clean-up work. The section of road between the Gaoyang Service area behind the accident site and the accident site, which is about 3 kilometers, is severely blocked.

Two people were injured in an 18-car pile-up on the Munsan Expressway in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, around 6:40 p.m.
