Voting for South Korea's 21st presidential election began at 6 a.m. on Tuesday (June 3) (5 a.m. Singapore time).
Xinhua News Agency reported that polling stations in South Korea are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the vote counting will start immediately after the voting ends. A total of 14,295 polling stations were set up across the country, with approximately 44.39 million voters.
A total of seven candidates registered to run in this South Korean presidential election. Among them, two have announced their withdrawal from the race. Eventually, five candidates participated in the competition. Among them, Lee Jae-myeong, the candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, Kim Moon-soo, the candidate of the People Power Party, and Lee Jun-seok, the candidate of the Reform New Party, are the most popular candidates.
To encourage voters who might be unable to cast their ballots on the voting day to do so in advance, the early voting for this presidential election was held from May 29th to 30th. More than 15 million voters participated, with a turnout rate of 34.74%. Overseas South Korean citizens also cast their votes from May 20th to 25th.
South Korean public opinion predicts that the preliminary results of this presidential election may be announced around midnight on the 3rd. The Central Election Commission of South Korea expects that the vote counting of this general election will be completed around 6 a.m. on the 4th.
The Constitutional Court of South Korea passed the ruling to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol on April 4th, and Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from the position of president. According to the law, South Korea must hold a new presidential election within 60 days.
