Von der Leyen: The EU will enforce digital regulations without discrimination

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU will firmly implement a complete digital regulatory system. Regardless of who the person in charge of the relevant enterprises is or where their headquarters are located, the same standards will apply to tech giants including social media platform X, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Apple and Douyin.

Reuters reported that von der Leyen said in an interview with the US political news website Politico: "This is why we have launched case investigations into companies such as TikTok, X, Apple and Meta." We enforce the rules fairly, moderately and without bias. We don't care where the company comes from or who runs it. What we care about is protecting the interests of the people.

The EU's Digital Markets Act aims to restrict the market dominance of tech giants, safeguard a fair competitive environment and expand consumer choices. The regulated entities include large platforms such as Google's parent company Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, international travel service platform Booking.com, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft. This bill has been constantly criticized by the Trump administration of the United States in recent years.

In February this year, Trump signed a presidential memorandum, warning that the US would review the EU's Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act, arguing that these two pieces of legislation would affect the way US companies operate in the EU.

Eu Antitrust Commissioner Javier Rivera pointed out earlier this month that the EU will make a ruling on whether Apple and Meta have violated relevant regulations in the coming weeks.

Reuters earlier quoted sources as saying that the two companies are expected to face relatively minor fines for violating the Digital Markets Act.
