The United States has accused China of unfair trade practices in the semiconductor industry, but has stated that it will not impose additional tariffs on wafer imports until at least June 2027.
According to reports from Bloomberg and Reuters, in December last year, the Biden administration announced the launch of a Section 301 investigation into Chinese wafers. The Office of the United States Trade Representative released the relevant investigation results on Tuesday (December 23rd).
The Office of the United States Trade Representative said in a statement, "China's approach of aiming to dominate the semiconductor industry is unreasonable and imposes a burden or restrictions on U.S. business. Therefore, action can be taken."
Although no immediate imposition of tariffs has been announced yet, the US government has proposed possible measures to be taken in the future. The initial tariff level will remain at zero for 18 months and will not be raised until June 23, 2027. The specific tariff rate will be announced at least one month in advance.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not commented on this yet.
The decision to postpone the imposition of new tariffs indicates that the Trump administration is seeking to stabilize Sino-US relations and consolidate the agreement reached in South Korea in October this year.
Under this agreement, the United States and China agreed to avoid imposing high tariffs and ease export restrictions on technologies and critical minerals.
