(London, general news) In the face of an internal rebellion within the Labour Party, British Prime Minister Straw finally resigned in a show of resignation. He will remain as prime minister until the party selects a successor within September. The most popular candidate for the new Labour Party leader, former mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham, immediately announced that he would run for the position of party leader and become the prime minister.
Stammer led the British Labour Party to an overwhelming victory in the parliamentary election on July 4, 2024. However, he was forced to step down from the position of prime minister less than two years later. This also means that the UK will have its seventh prime minister in the next 10 years.
The 63-year-old Straw announced his resignation outside 10 Downing Street, the prime minister's residence in London, on Monday (June 22nd). He said, "Every decision I have made has been for the country I love. That is why I will step down as the leader of the Labour Party."
He said that the selection process for the new party leader would commence on July 9th and be completed before the parliament enters its summer recess. He will continue to serve as the prime minister until a successor is chosen and officially takes office in September.
He also promised that regardless of who is elected, he will do his utmost to ensure a smooth transfer of power. He will instruct the national executive committee of the Labour Party to draw up a timetable for selecting the party leader.
Who would take over Stammer's position became the focus of attention. The top favorite candidate, Burnham (Andy Burnham), promptly announced that he would compete for the position of party leader.
Burnham posted on the social media platform X, calling for an orderly and responsible transfer of power within the party. He wrote: "I will participate in this process."
The 56-year-old Burnham recently won the Makerfield constituency in the by-election held on the 19th of this month and returned to the parliament. His popularity is at an all-time high.
Stammer led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election. However, during his tenure in office, he was criticized for his inconsistent policies, especially regarding immigration and energy policies. Moreover, he failed to fulfill his promises to improve people's livelihoods, which led to a rapid decline in his approval rating. Previously, more than 100 Labour Party members publicly demanded that Stammer resign or set a timetable for his departure. Cabinet members such as the Defense Secretary and the Health Secretary also resigned due to their dissatisfaction with his leadership.
Stammer had promised to bring an end to the chaos in British politics, but ultimately he couldn't withstand the pressure of being besieged from all sides. When he announced his resignation on Monday, he admitted that now everyone in the party was hoping for his departure.
"The issue my party is currently facing is whether I am the best candidate to lead the entire party in the next election. Regarding this question, I have received the response from my parliamentary faction, and I am pleased to accept it."
Stammer spoke with obvious emotion, even choking up. After he announced his resignation, the value of the pound and government bonds remained stable, reflecting that the market had expected this outcome. In fact, just the day before, US President Trump had already posted on social media to announce that Stammer was about to resign.
After winning the by-election in his constituency last Friday, Burnham also told Labour Party members that this by-election result might be a turning point in British politics and the last chance to change the course.
After announcing his intention to seek the position of Prime Minister, Barnham recently resigned. Strittin, the British Health Minister who had resigned earlier, confirmed on social media that he would not compete for the position of the leader of the Labour Party.
Stritton said last month that if the Labour Party re-elects its leader, he will run for the position. However, he now says that if the differences in political views among the candidates are not significant, there is no need to "exaggerate the minor differences between each other" throughout the summer. This would be detrimental to both the Labour Party and the country.
He disclosed that after having a conversation with Burnham, he was convinced that the policies he had been advocating would still be implemented under Burnham's leadership.
Apart from Strittin, no other person has publicly expressed their intention to compete so far.
