The Kremlin has warned that Germany's chanceller-designate Merz could increase tensions by suggesting it could supply Ukraine with long-range missiles.
According to Reuters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a daily briefing on Monday that it was clear from Mertz's comments that he would advocate a "tougher stance" that would inevitably lead to further escalation of the situation between Russia and Ukraine.
"Unfortunately, European governments seem unwilling to pursue a path to peace negotiations, preferring instead to further incite continued war," he said.
Asked by German public broadcaster ARD on Sunday whether he would supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine, Merz responded that he would consider it if it was part of a broader support package with European Allies.
"It has to be mutually agreed," he said. If there is an agreement, Germany should be part of it."
Germany has been one of Ukraine's main military backers, providing about 7.1 billion euros in military aid last year, according to government figures. However, despite repeated requests from Kiev, Germany has never provided Taurus missiles with a range of more than 480 kilometers.
