US President Trump said that the Houthi forces in Yemen have agreed to stop threatening the safety of navigation in the Middle East waters. On this basis, the United States will stop bombing the Houthi forces. However, the Houthi forces said that in view of Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip, they will continue to launch attacks against Israel.
According to reports from Xinhua News Agency and Bloomberg, Trump said at a press conference with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Carney at the White House on Tuesday (May 6) that the Houthi forces have declared that they "do not want to fight any further" and "they have surrendered", and the US side will respect this decision and stop air strikes.
Trump said, "More importantly, we will believe what they say."
Oman's Foreign Minister Badr posted on social media on the same day that according to the consultations and contacts between Oman and the US and the relevant authorities in Sana 'a, Yemen, the US and the Houthi armed forces have reached a ceasefire agreement.
Badr said that in the future, the two sides will no longer attack each other, including not targeting US vessels in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, to ensure freedom of navigation and the smoothness of international trade and shipping.
Badr also said that Oman expressed its gratitude for the constructive attitude adopted by both sides to bring about this positive outcome, and hoped that this move would pave the way for further progress on multiple issues in the region and promote the realization of justice, peace and prosperity. The specific terms of the agreement have not been announced yet.
Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a member of the Houthi Armed Political Bureau, said in an interview that this agreement "is related to the U.S. aggression against Yemen, not our support operations for the Gaza Strip, and these operations will continue."
In addition, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, the chairman of the Supreme Revolutionary Council of the Houthi armed Group, posted on social media platform X that an assessment would be made on the United States' cessation of "aggression" against Yemen. He also said that the Houthi forces will continue to support Gaza in ending the war and stated that the ceasefire agreement with the United States does not include the Houthi forces' cessation of attacks on Israel.
Since the end of 2023, as Israel intensified its military operations against Hamas, the Houthi forces began to attack ships, causing a significant decline in the volume of shipping on this key waterway.
After the outbreak of a new round of the Israel-Kazakhstan conflict in October 2023, the Houthi forces in Yemen used drones and missiles to attack relevant targets in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, demanding that Israel cease its military operations in the Gaza Strip. Since January 12, 2024, the United States and the United Kingdom have launched multiple air strikes against Houthi targets, causing casualties. On March 15th of this year, the United States began large-scale air strikes against the Houthi armed forces. Subsequently, the Houthi armed forces launched attacks on US aircraft carriers and their accompanying ships.
