Depicting the Future World Through Comics: South Korea Invites the Public to Explore Ten Years of Technological Transformation

South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT recently announced a joint "Imagine the Future of Technology: Single-Panel Comic Contest" with the Korea Science and Creativity Promotion Foundation. The contest invites participants of all ages to depict the future direction of technology and possible scenarios where technology will change human life through comics. The theme of this event is "How Technology Will Change Our Lives Ten Years From Now," aiming to stimulate public reflection on future technological trends through artistic creation and to raise public awareness of scientific and technological development.

The contest requires participants to create a single-panel comic depicting their vision of a technologically advanced society ten years from now. Participants can create works in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, smart cities, future healthcare, environmental technology, autonomous transportation, and virtual reality, visually expressing the potential changes that technological progress may bring to human life. For example, whether artificial intelligence will become an important assistant in daily life, how smart devices will improve work and lifestyles, and how technological innovation can help solve social problems are all possible themes.

To accommodate different creative trends, the contest includes two categories: "Original Single-Panel Comics" and "Generative Artificial Intelligence Single-Panel Comics." The original single-panel comic category primarily encourages participants to unleash their creativity, using hand-drawn or digital painting tools to complete their works and showcase their unique understanding of future technologies. The generative AI single-panel comic category, on the other hand, leverages rapidly developing AI creation technologies, allowing participants to generate comic works using AI tools.

In the AI ​​category, participants must submit not only their final artwork but also the AI-generated prompts used during the creation process. This requirement aims to allow judges to understand the creative process behind the work and how participants utilized AI tools to realize their ideas. In this way, the competition focuses not only on the final product but also on the collaborative process between humans and AI, reflecting new creative methods in the technological age.

To encourage wider participation, the competition is categorized for different age groups. Both categories are divided into student and adult groups, allowing teenagers, university students, and adults to express their views on the same theme. The organizers hope that this approach will encourage people of different ages to consider the future of technology from their own perspectives. For example, students may focus more on future learning methods, smart campuses, and robotic companions, while adults may be more concerned with the impact of technology on work patterns, economic development, and social structures.

This event also features a special arrangement: some outstanding works will be preserved and placed in a time capsule. These works will be displayed during the opening ceremony of the 2027 Korea Science Festival and are planned to be opened in 2036. At that time, these works will become a unique historical record, allowing people to review public predictions about future technological developments in 2026 and compare them with the reality ten years later, thus observing the speed of technological development and the connection between human imagination and actual innovation.

Lee Joon-bae, Director of the Future Talent Policy Division of the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea, stated that he hopes this competition will serve as a platform connecting different age groups, allowing students and adults to participate in discussions about future technologies. Through comics, a more intuitive and easily disseminated format, people can more freely express their expectations for technological development while also reflecting on the potential challenges it may bring.
