Israel has accused Hamas of violating parts of the Gaza truce and has said the Israeli cabinet will not meet on the deal until Hamas confirms all of it.
Qatar and the United States announced Wednesday that Israel and Hamas had reached a deal for a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. Just a day after the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying, "Hamas has reneged on part of the agreements reached with the mediator and Israel in an attempt to extort last-minute concessions."
Mr. Netanyahu accused Hamas of creating a last-minute crisis by the move, but he did not specify what was in the agreement, which is in dispute.
But Hamas official Ahmed Sami told Agence France-Presse, "Netanyahu's claims that Hamas is violating the cease-fire are groundless." Senior Hamas official Khalid Resic told Reuters that Hamas was committed to implementing the ceasefire announced by the mediators.
Israel had planned to hold a cabinet meeting Thursday to approve the Gaza cease-fire and the release of hostages. However, Netanyahu said in a statement that the Israeli cabinet would not meet until the mediator informs Israel and Hamas that they have accepted all elements of the agreement.
The agreement largely follows a framework proposed by U.S. President Joe Biden last May. Qatar said Hamas would release 33 Israeli hostages in the first phase of the 42-day deal.
