(Jerusalem) The Israeli Security Cabinet has approved the expansion of military operations in Gaza. The plan includes the occupation and control of the entire Gaza Strip. The military has issued conscription orders to tens of thousands of reservists to support the expanded military offensive. This plan will be implemented only after US President Trump's visit to the Middle East next week. Before that, Israel will continue to seek a ceasefire and replacement agreement with Hamas.
Israeli media reported on Monday (May 5th) that the Israeli Security Cabinet unanimously approved a plan to gradually expand the offensive against Gaza at a meeting on Sunday night (May 4th). This plan includes launching a strong strike against Hamas, occupying the Gaza Strip, and relocating Gaza residents to the south to protect their security. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu will also continue to promote a proposal by Trump to allow Gaza residents who voluntarily leave to travel to neighboring countries such as Jordan and Egypt.
Earlier on Sunday, the chief of the General Staff of the Israeli army, Zamir, issued a conscription order to tens of thousands of reservists. Israeli officials said that if the two sides still fail to reach an agreement on the release of hostages by the time Trump ends his trip to the Middle East, Israel will launch a large-scale offensive in Gaza as planned until all its goals are achieved. Trump is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates from next Tuesday to Friday (May 13th to 16th).
Israeli Security Cabinet Minister Elgin said that such a timetable provides space for Israel to negotiate with Hamas. If Hamas realizes that we are serious, then we still have a chance (to reach an agreement) before President Trump ends his trip to the Middle East.
Elgin said that the Israeli army would withdraw after attacking specific areas in Gaza previously, but according to the latest plan, they will control the occupied areas until Hamas is defeated or agrees to disarm and leave Gaza.
Israel's plan has raised concerns from the outside world. The European Union warned on Monday that this would cause more casualties and suffering among Palestinians and urged Israel to exercise maximum restraint.
Israel and Hamas reached an agreement on a ceasefire and the exchange of detained personnel in January this year. However, the second phase of negotiations has been slow to advance, and Israel resumed military operations in Gaza since March. In response to Israel's decision to expand its offensive, organizations representing the families of Israeli hostages criticized the government for sacrificing hostages for territorial reasons.
Israel's Security cabinet also approved on Sunday to resume the delivery of aid supplies to Gaza if necessary. Aid will be distributed by international organizations and private security contractors instead. The Israeli military will not directly participate in the distribution of materials, but will provide security guarantees during the process.
Israel has suspended the entry of any supplies into Gaza since March 2nd. Humanitarian aid organizations have warned that this has brought serious consequences to the people of Gaza. But Agence France-Presse, citing informed sources, reported that Israel's security cabinet believes there is still sufficient food in Gaza at present.
The Houthi forces will repeatedly attack to impose a complete air blockade on the airport
The Houthi forces in Yemen have vowed to impose a total air blockade on Israel by repeatedly attacking its airports in response to Israel's latest action plan on Gaza.
The Houthi armed group sent an email to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on Sunday night, calling on international airlines to cancel all flights to Israel for the safety of aircraft and passengers. Earlier that day, the area near Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv was attacked by missiles fired by the Houthi forces. Netanyahu vowed to respond strongly to the Houthi and Iran, which supports it.
Iran denies any connection with the airport attack. Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the attack was a decision made by the Houthi forces to support the independence of the Palestinian people. In response to the threat from Netanyahu, Iran warned Israel and the United States not to take action against it, or they would bear the consequences themselves.
In addition, the Houthi forces said on Monday that the US military launched air strikes on multiple places including the Yemeni capital Sana 'a at night, injuring at least 14 people.
