The British media reported that Prime Minister Stammer would resign, but sources said he would still remain in power

(London Summary) British media reported that Prime Minister Stammer is expected to announce his resignation as early as Monday and release a timetable for his departure. However, members of the British cabinet have denied these claims, stating that Stammer is still focused on governing the country.

The Observer of the UK reported that Stammer is currently discussing his future plans with his wife at Chequers Estate, and will then make a final decision. Party leaders of the Labour Party expect that Stammer will issue a clear statement as early as Monday (June 22nd).

It is reported that after having conversations with cabinet ministers, advisors, donors and trade union leaders, Stammer believes that his position as prime minister is no longer sustainable.

However, British Trade Minister Keel said in an interview with British Sky News on Sunday (21st) that there is no reason to believe that Stammer plans to resign.

When asked about the reports that Stammer was preparing to resign, Kyle said straightforwardly: "I have no reason to believe these reports are true."

He disclosed that the two had a lengthy and candid conversation on Friday, emphasizing that Stammer's focus has always been on national affairs rather than personal interests.

He added that, based on his knowledge of Stammer, he has always seen him dedicatedly focused on his work. "At the same time, Stammer is also striving to carve out space for himself to examine the current political reality, challenges and opportunities facing the UK."

The threat to Stammer's leadership position has been brewing for several months. Manchester Mayor Burnham won the parliamentary seat re-election in northern England on Friday (19th), successfully returning to the parliament. This has cleared a key obstacle for him to challenge Stammer's position as the leader of the Labour Party in the future.

Stammer said on Friday that if a party leader election were to take place, he would participate in it and reiterated that he would not "just walk away".

Stammer led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, but subsequently his popularity declined due to a series of controversies, policy reversals and failure to fulfill promises to improve people's livelihoods. Reuters reported that more than 100 Labour MPs have publicly demanded his resignation or the setting of a departure timetable, accounting for approximately a quarter of the total number of Labour MPs in the House of Commons.

If Stammer resigns or is removed from office, it would mean that the UK will have its seventh prime minister within just a few decades. This is the period with the most frequent changes of prime ministers in the past two centuries, reflecting the public's anger at successive governments for failing to improve public services and address issues such as illegal immigration.
