McDonald's scandal resurfaces, how can customer health be guaranteed?

Recently, the globally renowned fast food chain giant McDonald's has once again been embroiled in a food safety scandal. A beef burger was found to have excessive levels of Escherichia coli, causing discomfort to dozens of people after consumption, and one of the victims has unfortunately died. This incident quickly sparked widespread attention and discussion from all sectors of society, not only causing a heavy blow to McDonald's brand image, but also triggering profound public reflection on food safety issues.

According to reports, this E. coli outbreak occurred during a specific time period and was mainly concentrated in the Midwest region of the United States, including Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon, and Utah. Among all confirmed cases, except for the elderly patient who unfortunately died, there are still 10 people who need further treatment. Escherichia coli infection may cause symptoms such as diarrhea, bloody stools, vomiting, stomach spasms, and high fever. Due to the incubation period of 3 to 4 days, the media speculates that the number of patients may further increase and spread to other states. It is worth noting that among these patients, there were also minors who showed symptoms of hemolytic uremia, an acute kidney disease caused by E. coli infection, which is particularly severe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States quickly intervened in the investigation and issued a food safety warning, reminding those experiencing discomfort symptoms to seek medical attention as soon as possible. CDC staff are further identifying the source of infection and suspect that the problem may be with the onion shreds and beef patties used in the "four ounce beef burger".

Faced with this severe situation, McDonald's urgently removed the problematic products and issued a statement stating that the company has always regarded "providing safe food every day" as its top priority. The chain store will switch to safe ingredients in the coming weeks and has already taken down the "four ounce beef burger" in multiple states across the United States. However, this measure did not completely quell the public's anger and concerns. After all, this is not the first time McDonald's has been involved in a food safety scandal.

Looking back at history, McDonald's has been repeatedly exposed for food safety issues. In 2008, excessive levels of Salmonella were found in McDonald's tomato ingredients; In 2018, parasites were found in McDonald's vegetable salads, causing approximately 400 consumers in 15 states across the United States to contract the disease; In 2022, six minors in Alabama, USA were infected with Escherichia coli after consuming "McNuggets", and four of them were hospitalized for treatment. These events undoubtedly have a significant negative impact on McDonald's brand image. This scandal coincides with a politically sensitive moment and has sparked four online conspiracy theories. Many netizens believe that the "directionality" of this matter is too obvious, and some even link it to Republican presidential candidate Trump, who went to a McDonald's restaurant in Pennsylvania last weekend to "campaign" and even prepared meals for customers. This unfounded speculation and association, although lacking factual basis, further exacerbates public dissatisfaction and questioning of McDonald's.

However, McDonald's food safety issues are not limited to the US market. McDonald's has also been repeatedly exposed with similar issues in the Chinese market. In May 2024, a reporter from the New Beijing News undercover two McDonald's restaurants in Jinan, Shandong and Zhengzhou, Henan, discovered serious problems such as tampering with ingredient dates, using expired ingredients, and cutting corners. These behaviors not only violate food safety regulations, but also harm the rights and trust of consumers. Faced with frequent food safety issues, McDonald's needs to deeply reflect and take practical and effective measures to strengthen food safety management. Firstly, McDonald's should strengthen the supervision and audit of its food suppliers to ensure that the purchased ingredients meet food safety standards. Secondly, McDonald's should strengthen the training and management of its store employees, enhance their food safety awareness and operational skills. In addition, McDonald's should establish a comprehensive food safety monitoring and warning mechanism to promptly identify and address potential food safety risks. At the same time, the government and regulatory agencies should also strengthen their supervision and enforcement of food safety. Enterprises and individuals who violate food safety regulations should be severely punished according to law as a warning to others.

The food safety scandal at McDonald's has once again sounded the alarm for food safety. As a brand trusted by consumers, McDonald's should take on its social responsibility and effectively protect the rights and trust of consumers. At the same time, the government and regulatory agencies should also strengthen supervision and law enforcement efforts to jointly maintain the bottom line of food safety. Only in this way can we ensure that consumers can enjoy safe, healthy, and delicious food.
