US President Trump decided to meet with four congressional leaders at a time when the government shutdown was imminent.
According to reports from The New York Times and Bloomberg, US congressmen disclosed that the leaders of both the House of Representatives and the Senate will meet with Trump at the White House on Monday (September 29). October 1st is the deadline for the US government to shut down.
This will be Trump's first meeting with congressional leaders before the deadline to avoid a government shutdown. Senate Democratic Leader Schumer and House Leader Jeffries were originally scheduled to meet with Trump last week, but the White House cancelled the meeting at the last minute.
House Speaker Johnson, a Republican, said in an interview with CNN on Sunday (28th) that Trump "has always been open to discussion." When asked whether Trump intended to reach an agreement with the Democrats through negotiations, Johnson evaded the question and accused the Democrats of using government funds as collateral for "partisan demands".
The Republicans have been trying to push for a temporary funding bill to keep federal spending levels unchanged, but the Democrats have demanded an extension of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act and the revocation of Republicans' cuts to Medicaid and other health programs.
Congress must pass the government appropriation by September 30 at the latest, which requires lawmakers to agree on a spending bill that can receive at least 60 votes in the Senate. The Republicans only control 53 seats in the Senate, so they need the support of the Democrats. The Democratic Party has been demanding that Republican leaders and Trump negotiate with them.
Schumer and Jeffries said in a joint statement on September 27 that the Democratic Party is committed to avoiding a government shutdown. They said, "As we have repeatedly emphasized, the Democratic Party is willing to meet with anyone at any time and anywhere to negotiate a bipartisan spending agreement that meets the needs of the American people." We are determined to resolutely avoid a government shutdown and resolve the healthcare crisis of the Republican Party. Time is running out."
Senate Majority Leader Thun said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday: "We can have that kind of conversation." But please release the hostages first, set the American people free and keep the government open. Then we can discuss the issue of the premium tax credit.
The Republicans need at least seven Democratic lawmakers to support the Senate's short-term appropriations bill, which has already been passed in the House of Representatives. Trump previously threatened that if the government shut down, he would lay off a large number of federal government employees.
