The UK government is investing £600m with the Wellcome Trust to set up a new health data research service.

Xinhua News Agency reported that the British government issued a communique on Monday (April 7), the above measures were announced by British Prime Minister Starmer on the same day, aimed at accelerating drug development, improving patient care, and promoting medical research in the UK.

The new Health Data Research Service will improve access to health data in the NHS by centralising UK medical research data into a secure and easy-to-use single point of access. This means that researchers do not have to browse different systems or request information for the same project multiple times, reducing the number of tedious steps in the research process.

With the new measures, patient confidentiality will continue to be the gold standard, with strict security measures such as anonymity and virtual locking of rooms in place to ensure that health data is not compromised.

In addition, clinical trials will also be fast-tracked to accelerate the development of future drugs and therapies. According to reports, the health data research service will be based in the Wellcome Genome Park in Cambridgeshire, UK, and related initiatives are planned to be implemented from the end of 2026.

Mr Starmer announced on March 13 that NHS England, the executive body of England's health service, would be abolished to "reduce bureaucracy" and bring the management of the health service "back under democratic control". According to British media reports, the move will bring health services in England back under the direct control of the British Department of Health and Social Care.

The Wellcome Trust is one of the UK's largest charitable foundations dedicated to improving the health and welfare of citizens and animals.
