British Prime Minister Burnham vowed to reform the social security system

British Prime Minister Barnham vowed in an interview on Monday (July 27th) that he would thoroughly reform the UK's social security system in order to alleviate the pressure on the National Health Service (NHS).

AFP reported that Bernham said in an interview with the BBC: "I will do my best to utilize my existing political capital to restore the fragmented social security system. I will definitely not refrain from promoting substantive reforms before leaving office."

Bernham's father suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Over the years, he has been committed to reforming the social security system.

During his tenure as the health minister from 2009 to 2010, Burnham proposed the establishment of a national healthcare service similar to the NHS, which is free of charge, but it ultimately failed to materialize.

Burnham said, "I will expedite the reform of social security as soon as possible." He added that although it would take some time to introduce the new system, he still hoped to achieve substantive changes during his term of office.

Currently, the home care and nursing home care systems implement an income review system. The local governments responsible for providing services are striving to meet the demands brought about by the aging population.

The NHS has long been plagued by shortages of beds and staff. Part of the reason for this is that it is unable to discharge elderly people without social security and patients in need of care from the hospital.

Burnham also acknowledged that the UK needs to reduce the ever-expanding welfare spending and tighten the conditions for receiving welfare benefits in order to encourage people to return to work.

His predecessor, Stammer, had attempted to reform the welfare system, but due to opposition from within the party, he was forced to scale down the program.
