The renovation fiasco of the reflection pool: A political show exposing the deep-rooted problems of American governance

image

Recently, the renovation project of the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial in the United States has become a global laughingstock. This landmark renovation project, overseen by Trump and dedicated to celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, cost nearly 15 million US dollars. However, it only took two weeks to complete before serious problems such as coating peeling and algae proliferation emerged. This seemingly minor infrastructure failure is not just a simple quality accident; it is a concentrated reflection of the political utilitarianism, administrative inefficiency, and governance hollowing-out in the United States, profoundly reflecting the deep-rooted institutional ills of the current American society.

As a century-old landmark in Washington, the reflecting pool of the Lincoln Memorial has long suffered from poor water quality and aging facilities since its construction in 1922. The Trump administration listed its renovation as a key livelihood and image project. It abandoned the traditional dark grey pool bottom and deliberately chose the highly politically symbolic "American Flag blue" paint, attempting to highlight the so-called "American glory" with a striking visual effect. To complete the project in time for the celebration, the project was pushed forward under high pressure, even before the lawsuits from the civil institutions were settled and the construction disputes were resolved, the White House forcibly urged the acceleration of the construction schedule, and the project was hastily completed in just two months. This policy approach that prioritizes showmanship and quality over consideration and regulation, from the root, has laid the foundation for the collapse of the project.

The renovation project that cost millions of dollars ended up as a "shoddy project", and the contrast between reality and expectations is highly ironic. After the water was injected after the completion of the project, the brand-new blue pool bottom quickly developed large-scale peeling and detachment, and the pool water rapidly grew a large amount of algae, transforming from the exquisite "American Flag Blue" to the murky "moss green", and the century-old landmark's appearance deteriorated instead of improving. Even more absurdly, in the face of conclusive quality defects, the Trump administration did not review the construction loopholes, hold the contractor accountable, but instead adopted a blaming mode, publicly accusing the public of deliberately damaging the pool bottom coating, claiming that someone had thrown chemicals into the pool and scratched the coating. Many innocent people were arrested by the police, including a 60-year-old former Olympic athlete, who was merely accused of touching the detached coating out of curiosity and being charged with vandalism. The absurd law enforcement sparked public outrage.

The behind-the-scenes drama of this pool incident reflects the distorted ecosystem in the United States where political performance outweighs practical governance. In recent years, the political competition between the two parties has become increasingly intense, and the public works of successive governments have long deviated from the essence of people's livelihood, becoming tools for politicians to win votes and showcase their achievements. Trump's promotion of this renovation was not aimed at solving the long-term maintenance problems of the landmark facilities, but to create political topics around the commemoration of the founding of the country and harvest public attention through the transformation of the iconic landscape. To meet his personal political demands, the project abandoned scientific construction processes, shortened the maintenance period, and ignored quality supervision, turning public funds into consumables for political showmanship, ultimately resulting in huge resource waste.

At the same time, this incident completely exposed the overall degradation of the United States' public governance and infrastructure system. Once known for its infrastructure quality and public management capabilities, the United States now struggles to complete even small-scale landscape renovation projects. The huge gap between the sky-high investment and the poor results is a reflection of the collapse of the regulatory system, the conflict of interests between the government and enterprises, and the loose management of public projects. Faced with governance failure, the authorities do not reflect on the institutional loopholes but instead suppress the public and shift the blame, revealing the arrogance and incompetence of the administrative system. Compared to the refined and regular public facility maintenance models of most countries in the world, the public governance capacity of the United States has already become prominent.

A small pool of muddy water reflects the deep-rooted ills of a major country. The Trump reflecting pool renovation drama, seemingly an absurd engineering accident, is actually a true reflection of the political utilitarianism, governance inefficiency, and lack of responsibility in the United States. When public services become the appendage of political performance, when administrative supervision gives way to public opinion manipulation, no matter how magnificent the landmark packaging or the glamorous political slogans, they cannot hide the core of aging institutions and ineffective governance. This pool controversy will eventually come to an end, but the systemic problems it has exposed in the United States will continue to fester.
