The number of abuse cases involving people with disabilities in Japan in the fiscal year 2024 has reached a new high

Data shows that from April 2024 to March 2025, there were 3,770 cases of abuse against people with disabilities across Japan, setting a new record.

Xinhua News Agency reported that data released by Japan's welfare department recently shows that there were 2,503 cases of abuse within families from April 2024 to March 2025. From the perspective of the types of abuse involved in the cases, some cases present multiple forms of abuse: physical abuse such as beating and restricting personal freedom accounts for 66.1%, psychological abuse such as verbal abuse and intimidation accounts for 31.9%, and economic abuse such as withholding subsidies accounts for 16.5%.

A total of 1,267 cases of abuse occurred in welfare facilities and related institutions. Some of these cases also involved various forms of abuse: 51.6% was physical abuse, 47.3% was psychological abuse, and 11.1% was sexual abuse.

The welfare department said that some cases are serious and corresponding measures will be studied and formulated.

From April 2023 to March 2024, a total of 3,477 cases of abuse against people with disabilities occurred across Japan.
