South Korea's first Vice foreign minister, who is on a visit to the U.S., said he briefed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on the emergency martial law in South Korea and the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yoon.
Yonhap News Agency reported that South Korea's first Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs (Vice Minister) Kim Hong Kyun told South Korean media at Dulles International Airport on Sunday (December 22) that the government began to maintain communication with Trump before the US presidential election and has briefed the US side on the current domestic situation. He said there were no plans to meet with Trump during the trip, but that the administration would continue to communicate with the president.
Kim said that since he has fully communicated with the United States on the current situation, there is no need to make further explanations to the United States, but he will continue to share domestic situations with the United States through various opportunities in the future, and stressed the importance of continuously promoting the Korea-U.S. alliance and the development of trilateral cooperation between South Korea and the United States.
Kim will hold talks with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and meet with academics in Washington, D.C., on Monday. After his visit to the United States, Kim will head to Tokyo, Japan, to attend the ROK and Japan vice Foreign ministers' talks.
Kim Hong-kyun is the first senior South Korean diplomat to visit the United States since the country declared martial law.
Campbell has expressed concern about the situation in South Korea, but recently expressed confidence in the country's democratic development and that the South Korea-U.S. alliance will remain as strong as ever.
