The United States has launched an investigation into imports of drones, drone components and polysilicon, a key material for solar energy, laying the groundwork for possible tariffs on these goods.
Bloomberg reported that the US Department of Commerce launched this investigation on July 1 under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. This is the latest move by the Trump administration to review industries considered crucial to national security and may introduce tariff measures.
The Trump administration has also launched similar investigations into imports of semiconductors, medicines and other goods.
The US Secretary of Commerce should submit the investigation results within 270 days. If the investigation determines that the imports of the drones, drone parts and polysilicon under review pose a threat to national security, Trump can impose tariffs on these imported goods.
One of the investigations focused on the import of "unmanned aerial vehicle systems" (also known as unmanned aerial vehicle systems, abbreviated as UAS) and their components, while the other investigation targeted the export of polysilicon and polysilicon derivatives to the United States.
