Los Angeles and Southern California in the United States are facing strong winds for the second week in a row, and the fire is intensifying. According to US media reports, the US military has converted a number of C-130 large transport aircraft into firefighting aircraft, into the Los Angeles area fire fighting operations.
Eight of the aircraft, from the California, Nevada, Colorado and Wyoming National Guard, have been deployed to the California National Guard Air Base in the Channel Islands near the core of the fire, Xinhua quoted the report as saying.
The aircraft are equipped with the U.S. Forest Service's modular airborne firefighting system, which can be inserted directly into the rear compartment of a military C-130 aircraft and converted into a fire-fighting aircraft without major structural modifications. The modified aircraft can drop more than 11,000 liters of flame retardant in less than five seconds, cover an area 400 meters long and more than 30 meters wide, and reload in less than 12 minutes after landing.
A lack of adequate air support has been cited as one of the reasons the Los Angeles wildfires initially got out of control. At present, the Los Angeles wildfire is still burning, according to the latest data released by local officials, the nearly week-long wildfire has killed at least 25 people and destroyed about 12,000 buildings.
As the monsoon "Santa Ana winds" hit again on Monday (January 13) with winds of up to 112 kilometers per hour, the fire is particularly dangerous, and the meteorological department issued the highest level of "special hazardous situation" fire warning, warning local residents that they may face a new round of strong winds in the next few days to intensify the fire situation.
The fires not only threaten human lives, but also destroy homes, businesses and cultural landmarks. A weather service expert told the media that issuing the alert was "one of the loudest ways we can shout it out."
Officials worried that dry, strong winds would limit firefighters' opportunities to fight the blazes from the ground and air, making it more difficult, and said they were prepared for a "worst-case scenario" while warning Los Angeles County residents to be ready to evacuate if needed.
The Eaton and Palisades fires, which continued to burn on the east and west sides of the Los Angeles area overnight Sunday and into the morning of Jan. 13, were relatively calm. The Eaton fire has barely grown to an area of about 57 square kilometers, and firefighters have expanded control of the fire to about 33%. The Palisades fire has burned an area of 95.9 square kilometers and is about 14 percent contained.
"There is no chance of rain and winds are picking up, and while individual days may vary, the fire weather danger remains high," Bob Oravec, a senior forecaster at the National Weather Prediction Center, was quoted by Bloomberg as saying.
