The explosion that occurred in the port of Shahid Rajah in southern Iran has killed 40 people and injured more than 1,200. The Iranian government declared Monday (April 28th) a National Day of mourning.

According to reports from Xinhua News Agency and Bloomberg, as of Sunday (27th), the governor of Hormuzgan Province, where the port of Shahid Rajah is located, announced that 40 people have been killed in the explosion so far. According to the statistics of Hormuzgan Medical University, more than 1,200 people were injured in the explosion, among whom about 950 were discharged after receiving treatment.

Iranian President Peshiziyan said at a crisis management meeting held in Bandar Abbas, the capital of Hormuzgan Province, on Sunday night that the management situation of the port of Shahid Rajah was unacceptable. This port has long stored 120,000 to 140,000 containers. Such a large number of containers has put the port in a state of disorder. Pezzechiyan instructed that comprehensive support should be provided to the affected families.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has demanded a thorough investigation into the explosion at the port of Shahid Rajah and stated that he will never tolerate any negligence or deliberate behavior.

Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Sadeg, said that after the accident, some freight transportation has resumed operation.

Shahid Rajah Port is a large commercial port in Iran, close to the Strait of Hormuz. It mainly handles container business and is equipped with petrochemical facilities such as oil storage tanks. It is reported that the port covers an area of approximately 2,400 hectares and has an annual cargo handling capacity of 70 million tons. This port consists of 23 piers, with a water depth of 15 meters. Only one pier was severely damaged by the explosion. Iran's National Petroleum Products Refining and Distribution Company said that oil facilities near the incident port were not affected by the explosion.
