On May 19, 2024 local time, a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other members of his entourage was involved in an accident in the Warzagan region of East Azerbaijan Province. According to Iran's official news agency and Iranian state television confirmed the next day, Iranian President Raisi and other senior officials were killed in a helicopter accident.

After the accident, many governments expressed their willingness to assist Iran in the search and rescue of the accident helicopter and provide all necessary assistance. At the same time, the Iranian side quickly organized the rescue, but the rescue operation encountered great difficulties due to the inconvenient traffic in the accident area, poor mountainous and forest conditions and foggy weather.

The death of Iranian President Raisi has raised concerns about the situation in the Middle East and geopolitical risks. Some analysts believe that the incident may have a certain impact on Iran's foreign policy, but the extent of the impact may vary depending on various factors.

Some believe that as a result of Lehi's death, Iran may go through a period of political transition, and the new leadership may make certain adjustments to foreign policy according to domestic political dynamics and international situations. Such adjustments could include relations with major countries, positions on regional affairs, and roles on the international stage.

It is also believed that during Lehi's tenure, Iran's foreign policy was mainly influenced by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Although Raisi's death may have some impact on the Supreme leader's power structure, Iran's major policy decisions are still largely determined by Khamenei. As a result, Iran's foreign policy may not change much in the short term.

It is worth noting that Lehi's death may put Iran's negotiations with the United States in a temporary impasse. Since Leahy had actively promoted dialogue with the United States while in office, trying to ease tensions between the two sides, his death could hinder that process. This may bring more uncertainty to the situation in the Middle East, mainly reflected in the following aspects:

Domestic political turmoil: The Iranian president holds a pivotal position in the Iranian political system, and his death could lead to a realignment of political forces and a transition of power. This is likely to lead to a period of political turmoil and uncertainty, with the prospect of intensified fighting between various factions, and the important task of identifying new leadership and stabilizing the domestic situation.

Rising regional tensions: As an important country in the Middle East, changes in the internal situation of Iran tend to have profound effects on the entire region. The death of the Iranian president may lead to changes in Iran's stance and tactics in regional affairs, which in turn will affect its relations with neighboring countries. In particular, countries that have hostile relations with Iran, such as Israel and Saudi Arabia, may use this opportunity to strengthen their influence in the region or even launch military actions, which will further increase tensions in the Middle East.

Foreign policy adjustment: During his term in office, the Iranian president actively promoted cooperation with neighboring countries and tried to ease the pressure brought by US sanctions. His death is likely to lead to a degree of adjustment in Iran's foreign policy that will affect the political and security landscape of the Middle East. The policy orientation of the new president will determine Iran's future role and position on the international stage, as well as its relations with other countries.

Global economic and financial market volatility: The death of the Iranian president may also have some impact on the global economy and financial markets. Since the Middle East is an important region for global oil production and exports, changes in the situation in Iran may trigger volatility in the global crude oil market, which in turn affects the stability of the global economy and financial markets.

All in all, the death of the Iranian President may have a complex and far-reaching impact on the situation in the Middle East. All parties should remain calm and restrained, properly resolve differences and contradictions through dialogue and consultation, and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.
