Us President-elect Donald Trump has lashed out at President Joe Biden for pardoning 37 people on death row to life in prison and stressed his commitment to the death penalty.
Xinhua News Agency reported that on Tuesday (December 24), Trump posted on the Truth Social media: "Biden commuted the death sentences of 37 of the worst murderers. When you hear about everyone's actions, you won't believe he did it. It makes no sense."
Trump also said in a separate post Tuesday that once he takes office, he will direct the Justice Department to "vigorously pursue the death penalty" to protect American families and children from "violent rapists, murderers and monsters."
"We will be a nation of laws again!" he said.
Biden on Monday commuted the sentences of 37 of the 40 people on federal death row, commutating the death sentences they faced to life in prison. He also issued a statement saying that he still condemned the perpetrators of the death penalty, but that conscience and experience guided him not to stand by and allow the new government to resume the executions he had halted.
During his first term, which runs from 2017 to 2021, Trump renewed a nearly 20-year moratorium on executions. Biden, who made clear his opposition to the death penalty when he ran for president, imposed a moratorium on executions after taking office in January 2021.
Biden's decision to commute the sentence does not apply to cases of terrorism or hate-motivated mass murder.
Three men on death row - the 2013 Boston Marathon bomber, the 2018 gunman who killed 11 Jewish worshippers, and a white supremacist who killed nine black church worshippers in 2015 - did not receive commutations.
