The three major TV stations in South Korea have filed a lawsuit against the parent company of the generative artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT, OpenAI, on the grounds of infringement.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, on Monday (February 23rd), the three major South Korean TV networks - KBS, MBC and SBS - filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court, accusing OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, of using their news content without permission during the training process, and demanding that OpenAI make compensation and stop using unauthorized content.

It is reported that this is the first time that three TV stations have filed a lawsuit against global artificial intelligence enterprises. The Korea Broadcasting and Television Association said that they hope to pursue the legal responsibility of ChatGPT for infringing on intellectual property rights through this lawsuit.

The association pointed out that large global technology companies, leveraging their vast capital and technological advantages, have illegally exploited the intellectual property accumulated by other countries' media over the past decades and incorporated it into their own commercial interests. This behavior cannot be excused by claiming it as "innovation".

The association also emphasized that this lawsuit also involves the issue of South Korea's data sovereignty.
