The former president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, was involved in a case of obstruction of arrest and was subject to a second trial. The special investigation team demanded that he be sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The Yonhap News Agency reported on Monday (April 6) that on December 26, 2025, the special investigation team responsible for investigating emergency martial law incidents had requested the court to sentence Yoon Suk Yeol to 10 years in prison on charges of obstructing arrest and other crimes. On January 16 this year, Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to five years in prison in the first instance. The special investigation team then said that it had filed an appeal against the first-instance verdict.
Yoon Suk Yeol is currently involved in eight criminal cases. This case is one of the cases related to internal unrest in which he is suspected. On February 19th, the Seoul Central District Court of South Korea convicted Yoon Suk Yeol of the crime of being a leader of internal unrest and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
On the evening of December 3, 2024, then South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol issued an emergency martial law decree under the pretext of eliminating "forces from the North".
