South Korean sources say that diplomatic officials from South Korea and Russia recently exchanged views on matters related to North Korea, including the North Korean nuclear issue.

The Yonhap News Agency reported that according to a message from the South Korean diplomatic circle on Sunday (December 21), a South Korean Foreign Ministry official in charge of North Korean nuclear affairs recently made a secret visit to Moscow and met with Russian Foreign Ministry's non-permanent Ambassador Bulmistrov and other officials in charge of North Korean nuclear affairs. This is the second meeting between the officials in charge of North Korean nuclear affairs of the two countries since they met last October to discuss the issue of North Korea sending troops to Russia. Foreign ministers of South Korea and Russia held talks in September.

Against the backdrop of widespread predictions that significant changes will occur in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, this meeting between the two sides has drawn attention. It is speculated that South Korea may call on Russia to play an active role in maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula, and the two sides will exchange views on this matter.

As relations between North Korea and Russia have become increasingly close, South Korea believes that Russia can play a key role in encouraging North Korea to return to dialogue.

Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, relations between South Korea and Russia have been at an impasse. Analysts believe that the current meeting between the two sides on the North Korean nuclear issue is not unrelated to the ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Although the negotiation task is arduous and challenging, the war parties and the United States have begun to discuss the ceasefire issue. Both South Korea and Russia also need to prepare in advance for promoting the development of bilateral relations after the war. At the same time, it is necessary to communicate on the situation on the Korean Peninsula after the war.
