Japan Considers Acquiring Ukrainian Drones to Bolster Defense Capabilities

(Tokyo, Comprehensive Report) According to informed sources, the Japanese government has begun exploring the acquisition of Ukrainian-made attack drones for use by the Self-Defense Forces.

Multiple sources revealed on Saturday (March 14) that, in the course of repelling the Russian invasion, Ukraine has placed a strong emphasis on real-world combat feedback; consequently, it has rapidly accumulated experience—particularly in the field of small drones—and significantly enhanced its R&D and manufacturing capabilities. Japan aims to strengthen its domestic defense architecture by acquiring Ukrainian-made drones and intends to make a final decision after comparing their performance against similar products offered by other nations.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has expressed high hopes regarding Japan's provision of defense equipment; furthermore, the two nations are currently discussing the potential signing of a "Defense Equipment and Technology Transfer Agreement," which would cover areas such as intelligence protection.

Diplomatic sources indicated that Ukraine has already approached Japan to gauge its interest in such an acquisition. Israeli drones—which feature advanced technology—are also being considered as an option; however, given that Israel's military operations in Gaza and other regions have drawn widespread international criticism, the Japanese government has determined that acquiring Ukrainian drones would likely garner greater public understanding and support.

Ukrainian drones have demonstrated exceptional performance in terms of anti-jamming capabilities and operational range. Officials from Japan's Ministry of Defense noted that while Japan currently "lacks knowledge and experience" in this specific domain, Ukraine—drawing upon actual combat deployment—has "continuously refined its drone models over a short period, achieving truly outstanding performance." Tokyo hopes to simultaneously acquire both the underlying technology and operational expertise during the procurement process, with the ultimate goal of achieving domestic production in the future.

In its fiscal year 2026 budget proposal, the Ministry of Defense has allocated 277.3 billion yen for projects such as the "SHIELD" coastal defense system. This initiative aims to establish a defensive network designed to counter scenarios involving hostile forces approaching Japan's islands, while simultaneously boosting combat power through the large-scale deployment of both attack and reconnaissance drones. The Ministry of Defense emphasized that the operational deployment of these drones will be strictly confined within the framework of Japan's "exclusively defensive defense" policy.
