(New Delhi, News) Tens of thousands of supporters of the "Cockroach Movement" in India defied the police's decision to deny them permission to hold a demonstration. On Monday, they gathered in the capital New Delhi. The police initially used tear gas and brandished batons to try to stop them from marching to the parliament, but still thousands of protesters continued to advance.
The demonstrators were mainly students. They began gathering near the Jyotirmayee Manta Observatory on Monday (July 20th) and demanded that Education Minister Pradhan step down and take responsibility for exam irregularities such as test paper leakage and technical malfunctions. This was the largest demonstration in New Delhi in the past five years.
"The Cockroach Movement" is a protest led by young people. It began in May this year when the questions of the national medical entrance examination in India were leaked, affecting over 2 million candidates. It has continued to escalate due to issues such as high youth unemployment rate, and is regarded as the largest-scale public challenge faced by Indian Prime Minister Modi during his third term.
The founder of the Cockroach People's Party, Dipuk, and his supporters began a sit-in protest last month, demanding that Pradhan step down. Activist Wangchuk joined their ranks on June 28 and began an indefinite hunger strike, but the police forcibly took Wangchuk to the hospital on Saturday (18th).
The representative of the Cockroach People's Party said on Monday after negotiations with the government that the health minister, Nada, promised that the government would consider their demands. These demands included: releasing Wangchuk and Pradhan from detention, and compensating each of the deceased candidates 10 million rupees for their deaths. According to media estimates, there were about a dozen deceased candidates.
Nada then said that he had asked all the protesters to end their sit-in and assist the authorities in restoring normal order.
The Cockroach People's Party also claimed on Monday that Dipk was arrested by the police, but later clarified that this was untrue.
