China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, urged Japan to face up to its history, reflect on its mistakes and take concrete actions to provide a responsible explanation to the international community.

According to China News Service, Fu Cong said at the public debate on international rule of law held by the Security Council on Monday (January 26th) that the victory of World War II safeguarded the bottom line of human civilization and gave rise to the current international legal system. Eighty years ago, the Far East International Military Tribunal tried Japanese war criminals and severely punished a number of the culprits whose hands were stained with the blood of the people of the victim countries. This upheld international justice, safeguarded human dignity, and also issued a strong warning against any attempts to restore militarism and resume aggressive expansion.

Koizumi's fallacious theory brutally interfered in China's internal affairs, reneged on the international obligations that Japan as a defeated country must fulfill, openly challenged the international order based on international law, and seriously violated the basic norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Fu Cong said that over the past 80 years, countries have deeply reflected on the two world wars and jointly established an international system centered around the United Nations, an international order based on international law, and basic norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Today, China is concerned to see that unilateralism is resurfacing, power politics is rampant, bullying behavior is widespread, and international law is severely undermined.

He said that the international community needs to strengthen unity and cooperation more than ever before, and to revitalize international rule of law. We must resolutely uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, firmly safeguard the authority of international rule of law, adhere to the principle of consultation, contribution and shared benefits, and support the UN in playing a core role. China will work with other countries to actively promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, and make new contributions to strengthening international rule of law and promoting world peace and development.
